'"Nine Finger', the joint production by the performer Benjamin Verdonck, the Rosas dancer Fumiyo Ikeda and the choreographer Alain Platel, was without doubt one of the most unsettling theatre events of 2007. The makers based the work on the moving book 'Beasts of No Nation' by Uzodinma Iweala, an American who originates from Nigeria. The writer looks at the perversity of war through the eyes of a child soldier in Africa. Verdonck and Ikeda tell us this story in a way that is childishly poetic and yet highly perceptive.
